The question is not as absurd as it may first appear. In fact it is utterly believable according to the “chaos theory” of reality which basically says that small changes at the beginning of an activity can cause large scale alterations in the future.

I don’t know what to make of the “butterfly effect” in everyday weather but I believe in the theory when it comes to the choices we make in terms of future impact. For example, if Colonel Chamberlain had not chosen to make a daring charge at Little Round Top after his regiment had run out of ammunition, the Confederates might well have flanked the Union line, won the battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War might have been won by the South, the U.S. might have become a fragmented group of second rate nations and the whole world might now be speaking German or Russian!

In 1970 Norman Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize for possibly saving billions of lives by developing hybrid corn and wheat that could survive famine conditions and arid climates. But should credit also be given to the fluttering wings of Henry Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture and Vice President during FDR’s presidency? After all it was Wallace who was charged by the President to find a solution to world hunger and it was Wallace who hired Borlaug. Or was the butterfly actually George Washington Carver who pioneered research in plant nutrition and often took a young boy named Henry Wallace on field trips that began the latter’s interest in seed hybridization? Maybe the butterfly flap was first made by Moses and Susan Carver who rescued the kidnapped baby of their friend Mary Washington. Moses traded his only horse in exchange for the infant boy who was literally thrown on the ground cold and hungry and wrapped in a burlap sack and then kept alive by Moses who held the cold baby against his body as warmth and life revived. The Carvers then adopted and raised little George.

Well, you get the idea. Our choices DO matter and the choices we make today may impact eternity. If this were not so why would Jesus promise an eternal reward for even a cup of water given in His name (Mark 9:41)?

One of symbols for Christ’s resurrection is the butterfly because it springs from the cocoon a new creation just as Christ’s body rose from the tomb. Your choice to follow Christ and become a new creation in him (II Corinthians 5:17) or to reject Him and remain an object of God’s eternal wrath (Ephesians 2:3) is the most important choice you will ever make. It WILL determine whether you spend eternity with God in Heaven or apart from God forever in hell.

I love to sit on my back porch and watch the butterflies on the hill. This summer every time I see a butterfly I hope I’ll say a prayer that we will make choices that honor God and that encourage others to want to honor God with their choices too!
